Hello. I am 42 and have had AF for 6 years.Like many I have been an avid excercise enthusiast and developed the condition when I was very fit.I am gradually getting worse-the symptoms are dreadful(well you all know that!) and episodes are more and more frequent (a few hours a day ).I have taken every drug and had a few ablations.I currently take 400mg Fleccamide a day, which I can't believe can be doing alot for the rest of my body even if it sometimes prevents AF.I am under Papworth hospital in England where they do the maze. There seems to be a difference of opinion between surgeons and cardiologists as to the benefits of the Maze.I know that is my only chance of curing the problem but they are throwing up problems all the time. They want me to try having a pacemaker (plus the drugs)to see if that will control the AF.I have done alot of research and I can't believe that this is the solution.I would like to know if anyone had to go down this route pre Maze or has had any experience with pacemakers for lone AF.This country is very different to the US in it's attitudes to, and funding of, medicine which makes it hard to get the most up to date treatments and establish the best way to tackle problems. For example-are they just wanting to test out new pacemakers? !!or taking the cheapest option.Perhaps I am too informed and too synical.I want my life back.I am also interested to know what other people in the UK are finding and if I can be any support to anyone let me know.
Laura.
