My name is Hans Koster,male,53.I was very pleased to find you just before my maze. You helped me through a lot of fears and insecurities.I had my full open heart maze on June 7th 2001 in Antonius Hospital,Nieuwegein,Holland by Dr.Defauw.Before that I was ten years on medication because of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation,I had two flutterablations (didn't change anything) en two attempts of focal ablation (couldn't find the focus).Because in the end maximum doses of medication could not prevent the atrial fibrillations anymore I choose for the maze. The first ten days I was in a junctional rhythm en after that in NSR.But from the fifth week I have increasingly premature beats, sometimes one out of three, which is pretty annoying because I feel everyone of them. With exercise they (almost?) dissapear.Maybe it is because my heart restrate at the beginning of the SNR was 70(normal round 50) en is now already going under 60.I understand that the most of you having post operative rates from 80 and more and for a longer period of time.Anyway I have read that I am not the only one with premature beats (Rob) and hopefully they will diminish in the long run.But no medication (except anti coagulans),no atrial fibrillation en I feel (slowly)better and better.
About the anticoagulans (I understand you call it coumadin) I like to ask your experiences. In Holland everyone after the maze gets coumadin for about 6 months and my cardiologist says that there is only 50% chance to get off it, depending on the movements of the atria. But I get the impression that ALL of you, who are in NSR, are without coumadin, even short after the maze.Is that true? If yes, I cannot understand the difference. So I am very curious to hear your coumadin stories.
Greetings and keep up the SNR!
Hans Koster
