I came back from a 8 day vacation trip with the family to Crete (Greece) today, quite proud of my some 10 running sessions during the stay, including interval work outs and some serious (and dangerous!) hill running in the 100+ (F) Meditarian heat. Checking out the Maze board, my jaw fell to the keyboard when I read about Ed's achievment. Astonishing! Even - of course - for someone who has NOT gone through with a major heart op. To say the least, I'm impressed with the quick recovery Ed's been doing. The achievement really stands out as a "success story", perhaps not attainable for all of us, but nevertheless not impossible.
For me, more than three years out, running such a distance is unthinkable. This said in spite of feeling almost as strong as before the Afib difficulties started.
A comment on the resting pulse: for me, it's taken quite a long time for the resting pulse to come down. It's still way above (roughly 60-65) what it used to be (around 45-50). More importantly though - I think - is my pulse comes down rapidly after (or during) the intense parts of a work out. In addition to this, it seems like the max pulse rate as gone up again, at least from what I can see on the pulse monitor. The "trick" is to have the largest possible gap between the resting pulse and the pulse during a work out. The combination of a low resting pulse, and quick decrease of the pulse rate after a work out and a generally large "span" between lowest possible and highest possible puls are good indicators of being in good shape (please note: this is in part my own assumption).
Again - congratulations on your terrific effort Ed! Keep those success stories coming!
Best regards,
Anders
