Nancy,

I believe AF is hereditary. My Dad had what he called "rotten stinking spells" with his heart doing an irregular beat. I never heard AF mentioned by him or his doctor which was a GP, not a cardiologist. He was never referred to a cardiologist. His problem never prevented him from working until he died. However, he died in 1963 back when regular GP's still doctored you for everything. He had a coronary occlusion, blood clot. He wasn't on coumadin and was only 61. I happened to be the only one of five siblings who 'wound up' with AF and pvc's until my 79 years old sister found out she has AF last fall and cardiologist implanted a pacemaker in her. I told her that a pacemaker would not help AF and she should know that by my experience with them. She had one implanted anyhow. She doesn't even know when she has AF. She says she has some 'light' skipped beats occassionally, but who doesn't? She doesn't know what it feels like to have 'strong' pvc's. I hope she never does.

My sister was always a very active person and someone on the go all time. Now she worries about her pacemaker and has withdrawn from most activities. She's about to run her husband and sons nuts from refusing to go anywhere except to get her pacemaker checked. It has become a 'big deal' to her. One of her sons who lives in Birmingham, Al., is trying to get his parents to visit them this spring and no way will she go. She says she doesn't want to get that far away from her doctor.

Glenn
