One of my biggest concerns about my AFib was a stroke. With the blood pressure you just mentioned, it is a very real possibility.
I think a doctor that ignores or minimizes the possibility of stroke as well as the side effects and problems of drugs. Probably about a year ago (search for "stroke" in the archives someone referenced an article detailing the extent of stroke among Afib sufferers. Around the same time, I recall on this board or possible via email someone that was considering a MAZE and died of a stroke while waiting.
The risks of stroke FAR EXCEED by many, many times - the risk of the MAZE procedure. I couldn't imagine going back to that horrible stage of my life again. Between the fear of death or disablement, the lack of quality of life and the resulting depression, it was a bleak existence. For me, the fear of stroke or continuing deterioration in my already low quality of life made the risk of surgery nothing. The hope of a cure came right at a time when the AFib had damaged my heart to the point of Congestive Heart Failure.
As I've stated before, I would go through the MAZE every year if I had to for the quality of life in between. Having seen it's success in my life and many others here, I can't imagine waiting, searching for the "best" cure, or even pausing.
Yes, it is a scary deal. I wanted to jump in a car and drive South as fast as I could - instead of 40 miles North to the hospital. I wanted to run from the hospital except for one fact - I COULDN'T RUN. Thirty years of this horrible, increasing, debillitating disease called Atrial Fibrillation had robbed me of the ability to run.
Now I have an intense desire to go take my dog for a run around the block - so, I'll check back in later.
All my best to you, John
