The odds that your EP or even your cardiologist will suggest the MAZE are extraordinary. Bottom line is most cardiologists think surgery is radical and that drugs are the answer. If they suggest anything, it would likely be an ablation.

I had an idiot cardiologist try and talk me out of the MAZE and suggested ablating my AV node. When he saw that I was in Congestive Heart Failure he softened his tone a little.

An EP thinks the solution is an ablation - period. There may be a couple in the whole country that would suggest the MAZE, but that is it. The last EP I saw charged a thousand dollars just to say "shucks, I don't know".

They know little about the MAZE, do not understand the results or the risks and have a vested interest in "THEIR" solution or treatment option.

Those who pursue a cure for Atrial Fibrillation are pretty much on their own and can expect just about every "so-called" professional to stand in their way. So, don't be discouraged if the EP doesn't know about or have a favorable opinion of the MAZE. It's an amazing set up circumstances that totally apalls me, but that's just the way it is.

Thank God for people like Jim Pope and Jack Drum that have braved the odds and shared their experiences to help point out the path for others of us - and for the internet that allows us to take some control over our own future, medical results and even a cure.
