Alan: You didn't indicate how long you were off amiodarone before you went back on it (and then AF stopped within 24 hrs). I am curious, since it takes several weeks for amiodarone to be purged by your system, and also at least a few days for it usually to take effect, even if you took large "loading" doses.
Perhaps you were just about to become afib-free when you restarted the drug? I would ask your doctor if you cannot try taking increasingly smaller doses (you also didn't indicate how much you are now taking), perhaps reducing it slightly every 2 weeks to see if you can get down to a very small dose or finally be in NSR. You might need a touch-up ablation, which usually is a pretty quick procedure (at the CC).
It is not yet time to think that you are not in the 95% cure group, you just may be a little slower than most.
If you can get by on a small amount of amiodarone, and your doctor follows up with liver, lung, thyroid, and vision function testing on a semi-annual basis, you may end up being OK. I would strive for as little amiodarone as will keep you in NSR, if that is going to be your doctor's choice of drugs.
Keep us updated on your progress.
