Hello,
I am now 13 days post maze. I had the maze performed by Dr. McCarthy at Cleveland Clinic. I had been in chronic afib for 9 years I failed to cardiovert with quinidine and rythmol and my cardiologist told me amiodarone was too dangerous in the long run for a person my age (49 then, 54 now.). Eventually I maxed out on calcium channel blockers for rate control and began to experience serious digestive problems. Beta blockers were little better. It was than that I decided that it was time for the maze. My cardiologist here in Boston Dr. Stevenson was very supportive.
I had the maze done at CCF on June 27 and came out of surgery in NSR. I was elated. But 2 1/2 days later I slipped back into afib. Dr. Mills at CCF was able to use Rythmol to get me back in NSR but by the time I got back to Boston I was back in afib with a HR of 150. After trying to add lopressor to get the heart rate down and hopefully to get me back in NSR, Dr. Stevenson put me on amiodarone. 24 hours later I am back in NSR. Since I only expect to be on amiodarone for a couple months, I don't think too much harm can be done by the amiodarone and as I understand it keeping the heart in NSR during the healing process increases the odds of success of the maze.
Does anyone else have experience with this?

Thanks Jack for this wonderful site
