HR recovery after exercise

I’ve got a question about heart rate recovery. For many years I have tracked my heart rate during exercise with various tools such as Polar heart monitors and regular holter monitors. I have even used the old fashion method of two fingers on the wrist when I’ve been without my electronic toys. Over the years I have tracked my heart rate recovery after exercise. I have always used one minute to measure my recovery. Prior to my Maze, I would get a recover of something in the range of 20 to 25 bpm after a light jog. My rate would be something like 120 bmp at the end of exercise and after a one-minute rest it would drop at least to 100 bpm. At the time and just prior to my Maze I was taking Norpace and Atenolol that kept my rate depressed.

After the Maze things have changed and one of the main things that is different is heart rate recovery. As an example – The day before yesterday I walked up a fairly steep mountain road. The bottom of the road is at 6000-ft msl. At just one mile the elevation is 6500. Anyway, as I walked at a very easy pace of probably just under 3 miles per hour my rate started at 80 bpm and slowly increased to a max of 100 after about 15 min. Then, suddenly without changing pace or the slope of the hill the rate dropped to 90 bpm and stayed at 90 till the one mile mark. At one mile I rested for one min and then started a normal walk down the hill. During the one-min recovery the rate went up to 97 instead of down? As I walked down the hill my rate averaged about the same as during my walk up the very same hill! I didn’t feel that tired or overtrained. My breathing was normal for the effort. My resting rate seems to be about 80 and the max that I have recorded is 100 during exercise. I really haven’t tried to push myself yet.

Has anyone else noticed this lack of recovery after exercise? I also notice that it takes longer for my HR to come up. I am 48 days post maze and still taking Rythmol and Toprol. I haven’t had any afib in over 30 days!
