I can understand what you are talking about as far as heart rate during exercise. My unscientific take is that the heart rate doesn't increase as much as the percieved volumes of blood being pumped/beat increases(the heart is beating more efficiently with less beats).
I have had a great whitewater kayak season, and am planning a huge river this weekend, no wind problems, no sternum problems either.I haven't paddled the Hudson Gorge in 15 years, what a feeling after my maze last year.
