Tim,you describe exactly what I had so short after the maze:in the beginning of the exercise (in my case running) the heartrate won't come up,while running there were strange drops in rate on my polar(I noticed it too because I got suddenly shorter of breath)and indeed sometimes after the running the rate got up for a short time.And so short after the maze my max.heartrate was not more than 100/min.(without medication).I am almost one year after my maze now and most problems have subsided quite a bit:the heartrate while running is stable,after the running it comes down quickly as normal.My max.heartrate is above 140/min.The only thing is that it still takes some time to get my rate up,but that too is a lot better than it was before.
