Toprol XL is a Beta blocker. Cardiologists have fallen in love with Beta Blockers because of trials that show a significant reduction in heart attack deaths for heart failure patients on a Beta Blocker. I can't tolerate them because they drain my energy so badly by slowing me down too much and causing muscle fatigue. They have no specific positive effects documented for the medication other than the overall reduced death rate. As a result I think it may be over used with the attitude of "Well, it can't hurt anything and it might help.". More info at this site.
