I have had numerous occurrences of atrial fibrillation and flutter over the past 5 years. Have had two cardioversions - the first one lasted for a year. I am currently on 150 mg of flecanide and 180 mg of cardizem and still go into a-fib occasionally (once or twice a month for a few hours). My cardiologist suggested that I consider having a radio frequency ablation. The eletrophysologist discussed the procedure with me and when I asked about mapping to determine the site to be ablated, he said they would ablate the area behind each of the pulmonary veins rather than mapping the heart to determine the specific area. Is this a standard procedure? I am trying to determine if PVA is the best course of action. I am asymptomatic-can only be sure I am in fibrillation by taking my pulse-and heart echos indicate that my heart is healthy. I am 61 years old and don't like the prospect of taking medications for the rest of my life. Would appreciate any insight you can provide.
