The ablation procedure for afib has advanced dramatically in the past two or three years, and now has become a routine procedure at the best centers, with success rates of over 80%. Cleveland Clinic and the University of Michigan are two of the very best. The procedure is very easy on the patient and is done under sedation. A few hours after the procedure you feel like a million bucks. A one night hospital stay is required only to monitor your rhythms and to let the catheter entrance points heal a little.

If you need mitral valve repairs, or other surgical procedures that can only be done in conjunction with the MAZE, then by all means have the MAZE. However, if you only have lone atrial fibrillation, you have to be a masochist to have the MAZE instead of an ablation.
