I have visited Laura in hospital today and she has asked that I post an update on her progress.

The actual MAZE procedure which was carried out last Wednesday went well, and as stated by Tony Walsh, the Consultant was pleased with it. On Friday she was sitting out of bed, very tired and in a little discomfort, but not in any great pain. Apart from the overwhelming tiredness, Laura's biggest concern at the time was whether the procedure had been successful, a feeling I suspect all you that have had the MAZE experience immediately post-op.

However, on Friday afternoon while trying to stand she suffered a blackout and high heart rate (not sure if it was AF or not). She was confined back to bed, was put on a blood drip as blood pressure was very low and they thought she may also be anaemic, and was monitored closely. Friday and Saturday were hard days for Laura, but yesterday she was able to at least sit out of bed again.

However today (day 5) Laura has been able to walk small distances unaided. Blood pressure is still low, and this first level of exercise has left her tired, but the first signs of recovery have commenced!

She has experienced irregular heartbeats, for short periods rather than sustained as when she was in AF, but a feeling she describes as beating 'hard'. However, after the set-back over the weekend she is now in a positive frame of mind.
