I am sure Henry Alken will speak up, but my recollection is that he had a successful ablation for post maze atrial flutter. I had a single episode more than 2 years ago. I was shocked out of it, never took any meds to prevent recurrence, and have not had a repeat.
Return of atrial mechanical function lags behind return of electrical function. It may take a year to come back. That is why some folks still treat post maze patients with coumadin for a period after surgery, even though no one has ever formally documented an increased stroke risk (probably not enough numbers of post maze patients to do a study that would give statistically meaningful numbers, and given the proactive nature of "mazers" as a whole, there are probably not many who would be willing to be randomized into a + or - coumadin arm of a clot study post op).
Good luck with the ablation. I'm sure you will do well.
