Bill,
I was surprised that you mentioned the University of Pennsylvania and the Cleveland Clinic as both being at the 'cutting edge'.I have had an ablation at both places. The first ablation at the University of Pa. converted my atrial flutter to atrial fibrillation - not exactly a thrilling result. At no time during the days I was hospitalized there was any mention made of the Maze procedure by any of the several doctors I spoke with.
Thanks to this marvelous board of Jack Drum's I discovered the Maze procedure, which had never been mentioned to me, ever, by the cardiologists at U. of Pa Hospital, Temple University Hospital or Hahnemann Hospital.
I self-referred to the Cleveland Clinic for the Maze, which was performed by Dr McCarthy almost one year ago.
Three months ago I had an ablation (my second one) at the Cleveland Clinic with Dr Schweikert, which, combined with the Maze, effected a complete cure for me. My heart beat is a steady 70 bpm. I run every night with no problem. I have been off all medications for three months and am now taking just one aspirin a day.
I hope the knowledge of my experiences will be of help to the readers of this board.
I wish you every success with your ablation and I hope it restores you to perfect health.
Henry
