My son Chauncey is now scheduled for a PVA ablation on May 15th at CC. Since this proceedure has the prospect of replacing some maze surgery I'll keep the board informed of his progress. (I believe his proceedure will be the same proceedure as that done for Angie Strand) As some of you know he went to CC last May for the maze and was referred to the EP Dept. (Dr. Tchou) for a flutter ablation.
There seemed to be some interesting chemistry here. He had been on amiodarone for well over a year and had come off amiodarone for a month or more before his trip to CC. He had a successful ablation of flutter in the right atrium. (his previous fib was in the left atrium) and the fib came back about 3-4 weeks after his flutter ablation.
Amiodarone has a HALF LIFE of from 1 month to 7 or 8 months and in his case, the thinking was that the amiodarone was masking the fib.
The message I got out of this story (if you're considering typical spot ablation and if you're on amiodarone) is to have a good long talk with your cardio about washing amiodarone out of your system. He's been off the amiodarone for a year now (fib controlled by other drugs) and hopefully, the PVA ablation will fix his electrical system. At this point I'm told that the cure rate is 80%.(no drugs and no fib after 90 days) Will keep you all posted. Bill
