First of all, I want to thank Jack Drum for starting this board, and for all the contributors who are
so willing to share their experiences. I have learned more here about afib and the maze than any other
place. Certainly, no doctor ever told me about it. I have asked 2 different EP's about the maze. One
dismissed it, saying "no, the maze is not for you". The other one called it a "morbid operation". Those
opinions kept me from investigating further at the time. It's only recently that I have come to the
conclusion that I only have 2 options: Have the maze or live with the condition. I am 61 years old and
have had afib for 12 years. I have tried all the meds (except Amiodarone, which I refused) to no avail.
I have an appt with Dr. Duncan at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston on March 4. They will do
a heart cath, other tests, etc. If all goes well, Dr. Duncan will perform the maze on March 6. I'm
a little apprehensive about the surgery, but excited at the prospect of being cured of this insidious
condition. I have heard nothing but praise for Dr. Duncan and the hospital staff from his former
patients, so I think I will be in good hands. I will update as the time draws closer.
