I was a few weeks on holiday, but now I am back and I read the very interesting posting of Dr.McCarthy.A real concerning doctor while he is interested in our board! For me the most interesting part was about the coumadin.I had lone paroxymal atrial fibrillation,I am 7 months post maze now and I am in NSR.Still I have to take the coumadin.Reason:the atrial transport is not sufficient enough. That is the only reason,no valve problems, the atria are small(which is good),etc. My cardiologist claims that in 50% of the maze-operation this is the case and a reason for taking coumadin FOR LIFE!! So again:50% of all mazers must be on coumadin for life, according to my cardiologist and unfortunately I am one of them. You can imagine I am not happy with that.So I was very pleased to read in the posting of Dr.McCarthy that normally the coumadin was stopped in 3-6 months.I really like to have the opinion of Dr.McCarthy about this, but that is probably to difficult for me from Holland. So I put my hope on you mazers:Does anybody know more about this, how many of you are more than 6 months in NSR and still on coumadin and why.Is the meaning of my cardiologist widely spread or is it just a Dutch opinion.I hope you can help me out.
