Dear Friends:
Here it is Xmas and I feel fully recovered with lots of energy. I had 2 valves done at Cleveland Clinic. I also have a complete heart block and have had a pacemaker since age 23 but adjusted beautifully to it and had 2 terrific kids.
My question to me fellow mazers is this, since most of you were in atrial fibrillations before you had the maze, I imagine most of you have had a lot of experience with coumadin. Before my surgery I was on atrial fibrillations for 2 years and on coumadin. Since I did not get the maze but I did receive a St Jude mechanical valve I am still taking coumadin. I have to tell you that I feel soooooo gooooood now. I have tons of energy and I am happy, happy and fixing those valves was the best thing for me even though I din't realize how bad it had become for me untill I had them fixed. No more fatigue, no more shortness of breath going up hills and stairs. The only problem I have or worry is that my doctor said I should be between 2.5 and 3.5 for my protime. Well, before the surgery I was pretty stabilized. I had one green salad a day. (Can't give up my greens cause I love them) and 2 glasses a wine a day, because they told me it was either none at all or the same each day so they could work out my levels. But now, after the surgery I have been kind of up and down. First I was too high, then too low. What is the risk of stroke below 2. Does anyone know how much of a health risk it is? My last protime put me at 2.10 and I was worried. Should I worry so much? It is clouding my happiness of feeling so good. Anyway my doctor just tells me to repeat tests in 3 weeks and I wonder how safe I am wainting so long..... If anyone has any thoughts or comments on this, please let me know. Now I have still atrial fibrillations (I don't feel them because I have a heart block and a pacemaker) and a St Jude's mechanical valve. I take a green salad a day and 2 glasses of wine at dinner. No more medicines or pain killers.
Other than that I am very happy and feel the surgery was a wonderful thing for me.
Merry Xmas, Happy holidays.
fondly,
Sheena
