Five Months Post Maze

I had maze surgery on June 7, 2001 at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC after eight years with a-fibs. My surgeon, Neal Kon, had done several of these before and seemed secure in his knowledge. In addition (as long as they were in there)they did a single by-pass graft.

After the operation, my lung collapsed and I spent 6 days in ICU plus another 8 days in the regular room. My heart wasn't particularly interested in resuming NSR during that two week period. Finally, it calmed down and I left the hospital loaded with meds. Today, 5 months later I'm still on 100 mg. Tambocor (just recently down from 200 mg.) and 50 mg. Atenolol. I've been to cardiac rehab three times a week for the last three months and haven't been able to increase my heart rate to more than 79. It's the hardest thing to try and exercise when your heart is not cooperating.

I still, also, can't walk comfortably up an incline without huffing and puffing. I assume it's because of the meds and them not letting my heart work efficiently. I will be visiting my cardiologist in a couple of weeks and we'll talk about reducing the meds. However, until then........has anyone out there experineced the same after effects as I've had?
