Dixie: My humble advice would be to ask questions, such as:1: What version of the maze procedure does this surgeon use, I, II, III? The maze III is the variation being performed at most of the hospitals you have read about here. 2: How many maze procedures has the surgeon and his team performed? 3: What is the success percentage?(should be over 90%) 4:May you/your mother talk with other maze recipients? (Will the doctor ask some to call you as opposed to you bothering them?-As you can see by this site, happy people are MORE than willing to share their experiences).
There are a number of surgeons who have performed dozens and even hundreds of the maze procedures. I would not want to be one of the first done by anyone, but someone obviously has to be or have been "first".
Given that there are many, many cardiovascular surgeons who are excellent at what they do, yet they are reluctant to attempt the maze procedure, means to me that the ones who do it regularily are very, very skilled...and their surgical teams are as well.
You might have your mother's history, echo, etc. sent to one of the surgeons referred to on this site, for his review.
Good luck with your search.
