Post Maze Statistics

Most surgeons quote that 38% of individuals who have the maze procedure will have AFib for a period of time during recovery. Yet, upon reading many of the postings listed here on maze surgery recovery, the post AFib syndrone seems much more common. Is 38% too low? Is over 50% (or 65+%) too high?
I was recently released from the Cleveland Clinic in normal sinus rhythm (although I had had enough disarrythmia to question how long it would last); within a day or two back home I was having regular bouts of AFib that eventurally became chronic. As far as the hospital statistics are concerned, I was released in rhythm so perhaps I am listed as part of the other 62% who just stayed cured.

I guess I am beginning to believe that many new mazers should count on bouts of AFib after their surgery. I am not saying that this is really bad because almost everyone seems to revert to normal sinus rhythm once the healing of the heart begins to occur (I am now in NSR myself after 10 days dealing with AFib). What I am suggesting is that the statistic might be wrong and just prepare yourself for a little work upon being released from the hospital.

Why this occurs, I don't know. Jack and Anders (and others) sailed right through never having to face AFib again. Is surgical technique different? Possibly, although I doubt it. I think as has been suggested several months ago in these postings, that our doctors and hospitals don't follow up well enough to really gather accurate data.

So, whatever. I feel great and hope my success continues until I am off this drug and totally on my own. The maze was right for me and I think it will be for many others who consider the quality of their life important. Just be aware of post-op AFib.
