John, what I had removed was not staples, but just wire that they loop around through the sternum that they twist tie, and cut it off. I had 8 of them holding my sternum together until it grew back together.
I also had a sore back for some time, that gradually became ok. The soreness at the incision area stayed sore until I had the wires taken out. The soreness, or the scar tissue at the incision was also causing a restriction to the amount of neck movement that I had. The restriction to the neck came on so gradual that I didn't really notice it until the wires were removed, and I then noticed the new freedom of head movement.
I think that the number of people who have the wire removed are very small, but it was a great help to me. If a person continued having problems after 6 months to a year, I would investigate the possibility of the wires being the problem.
