How is a MAZE scheduled?

Can you tell me how a MAZE is scheduled. Do you have to visit the hospital on two separate occasions (once for tests, etc, second for the operation) ? Or is the whole procedure done in one visit?
Also, can a person go through this successfully alone, without support from a wife or family member?
