Even though I am a now an engineer and work with high tech equipment I am really still a mechanic at heart. I try to figure out things from a practical, hands-on perspective. I can't imagine trying to be accurate enough with a catheter to burn small multiple targets inside a beating heart. I understand how the EP specialist can determine where the catheter is in the heart but I have a hard time understanding how one can be accurate enough to hit the right spots. It makes me wonder how much colateral damage is actually done in the normal course of the procedure. Any one who has tried to use a coat hanger or wire to open a car door with the keys locked inside or tried to guide a fiber optic bore scope into a piece of equipment for inspection purposes knows what I mean. I know these are low tech examples but the concept is similar. Like Henry, I am glad that I had the Maze surgery where a competent surgeon could see directly what he was doing with his hands!
