John: After re-reading my post, I realized that I may have left a misconception. Yes, it was a stroke, caused by afib. I believe it was around 20 years or so into the good doctor's career of research re: cures for arrhythmias (he started as a research assistant around the early to mid '60s, and performed the first Maze I in '86). He could never have done the Maze on his mother and I believe that he didn't train other surgeons until the early '90s, after the success of the Maze III had been established. I imagine that her passing probably strengthened his resolve to find the best cure, as he is stilling doing for those afibbers yet to come.
I believe he feels that there is a genetic connection for a predisposition for those who develop LAF, but I don't know if he has been concerned about the "why" of this possible connection. He is a surgeon, not a geneticist, and he has always been looking for the best cure, with the fewest problems for the patients.
Perhaps if he and his associates hadn't had to beg for grants and support for their research for a "cure" for what their detractors then (and some NOW)considered a "benign condition", they might have been able to get into the genetic connection, if any. There certainly weren't any drug companies throwing money at surgeon/researchers trying to find a surgical cure.
