Jimmy, I'll second what Dave said about the atria. I'd only add that when the heart is enlarged as a result of a malfunctioning valve and the valve is repaired the ventricles assume normal size but the atria cannnot shrink back to size. I do not believe this is much of a problem since the pumping work of the heart is done by the ventricles. However anyone who has a leaking mitral valve (or any valve)ought to have it watched and if and when the heart begins to enlarge, have it repaired.
Finally this is to you, Dave: I am still lighting prayer candles for you. You endured a huge disappointment. PLease keep us postd as to your next steps.
