An enlarged left atrium is generally recognised as being one of the factors contributing to the possible onset of AFib this is determined by an Ultrasound scan, think it was any size over 4.5cm. Another contributing factor is how the PVs enter the heart, are the ostiums large or small or bunched all together in one big opening, this makes ablation much more difficult if they are.

I thought I read somewhere that if you have a enlarged left atrium and an Maze procedure is carried out they actually make it smaller to lessen the risk of AFib, but I could be wrong.
