Post Maze Atrial Kick

Dr. Cox performed the Maze on me in Jan of '00 and I've felt well and been in sinus rythym (except for a few days post-op) ever since. Last week my cardiologist had me do an Echo and he informed me that my atrial kick was not normal. He's not sure if this is a result of the surgery or the fact that I was stuck in AFib for almost 3 years (from the age of 27-30), but he expects it won't improve. Has this been a common complication and what if anything can be done?
If it worsens over time, what are the ramifications? I'm told it increases my risk for stroke but that it is still relatively low.
Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated.
