I run into the same thing also. Not on this newsgroup, but on others that are similar. I've spent an hour or more typing out a technical answer just to lose it. My problem is usually typing too quickly and accidentally hitting the ALT or CTRL key on the left side and boom!!! my text is gone.

The only sure way is to type out any lengthy response on a word processor and then cut and paste when you are ready to post. You also have the advantage of a spell checker that way.

Another option is to copy the text to the clipboard from time to time. Then if it were to get deleted from the screen, you can always paste the last copied version back into the box.
