Jim, we are all different in how our bodies handle post surgical maze situations. I probably got off easier than many. I believe that if you are fit, it really helps your recovery. In my case, I am pretty lean so Dr. McCarthy was able to open up the bottom three or four inches of my sternum and then do his job. For that reason, I never had the sleeping problems that others have had. I slept well right from the beginning (within reason). When I met with Dr. McCarthy prior to surgery, I asked if they could remove the intubation tube prior to my waking up. Again, perhaps because I was in good shape, they did and I never felt any discomfort. Six days after surgery I flew back to California and although weak, it caused me no problems. I am now two years post maze and find myself sometimes looking back on the experience with rose colored glasses so understand this when reviewing my post. Best of luck.
