Pati, I thought I would explain the 1/2 mile.
I had my surgery on a Friday morning and spent the rest of the day and night in recovery, as ICU was full.
Sat. morning they moved me from recovery to my regular room.
When I got there a male nurse took me the route up the hall ways I was allowed to walk and told me I was doing good and when I felt like it I should get up and take that walk.
With a IV tree in each hand I got up and did it 6 more times that day, with a hour or so inbetween. The next morning I was looking at the diagram of the route on the wall of my room, and it was almost a 400 ft trip. So 400 X 7 was 2800 ft, and that was over a 1/2 mile. I was awfully tired at the end of that day also.
I couldn't of done that distance all in one shot. When I told my nurse what I had done, she said that I shouldn't of walked that many times.
It really wasn't as much as it sounds.
