Pati, I was told at CC(post back surgery) that most respiratory therapist don't teach the spirometer correctly. There should be smaller window that you want to keep the "constant" level at. The ball going to the top...say 4500, is not as important as the little window of "best" gage. What it does, when done correctly, you gradually get the big ball up to the top, but you're doing it with much slower,longer, sustained breath. Of course it's harder than "popping" it up there. My Tom really worked hard on his a few months ago, after his kidney cancer surgery because he wanted to get all his Euphonium breath back! :-)
