Jim, you sound like a perfect candidate for the Maze. I wish you well - you deserve to be cured so you can continue doing the things you love. Your cardiologist sounds like mine. I was his first patient to go for an ablation to be cured of afib. He discouraged me from having an ablation and never mentioned the Maze. I did my own research and was fortunate to find this Board.
I think doctors who are risk adverse don't think it's smart to subject oneself to a procedure that might have a 1 in 200 chance of causing stroke or other serious problems. However, if they had frequent afib that spoiled their quality of life, they might see things differently. Taking a risk to be cured is a personal decision that only you can make and it sounds like you have already done your homework on this matter.
