I agree with Ed. I had my mitral valve repaired at the same time I had the maze, but my sister just had the maze for lone atrial fibrillation. I think that several years ago (before the proven success of the maze), Doctors were hesitant to perform open heart surgery to correct what they considered a "benign" condition such as a-fib when other forms of treatment were available such as anti-arrythmics. I still believe thet maze, as with any open-heart surgery, isn't for everyone, but it definitely can give patients back their lives. Something I'm thankful for each and every day.
