A lot of booze, and caffeine, certainly tobacco doesn't do anyone any good, even if they haven't had a heart condition and surgery. One thing I found interesting was that my roommate in St. Louis, who had had Maze surgery was a tobacco chewer. Dr. Cox allowed him to have his Red Man and a spit cup, realizing that to deprive him of a habit he'd probably had since he was 13 would cause more stress than it was worth, at that point. It's always better if we stay clean and pure in these regards, but people are going to do what they want. I don't see them as influencing surgery tremendously one way or the other, but they may be things one would want to look at stopping later, as general health enhancers.
