One very important thing to keep in mind regarding complications, is to put them in context. Consider the information sheet you get with an antibiotic, or some other mild prescription. If you read the list of documented side effects, you'd think you were taking rat poison!

All events and complications that have ever occurred are factored into the statistics. Of course, these go up dramatically if someone comes to the doctor with complications. When I was researching my WPW surgery, I founc that Dr. Cox had had five deaths, out of hundreds of cases, but when you read the medical history of these five people, it was a miracle they lived as long as they did, much less made it to Barnes alive. He was close to an ER doctor trying desperately to keep them alive, along with trying to correct their many problems.
