You need normal lung function for the right side between the ribs approach for the maze because when the maze is done this way, each lung is intubated separately, the right lung is collapsed, and the patient is ventilated through the left lung only during the procedure.

Whether or not one qualifies for and open chest procedure depends on a reasonable risk-benefit analysis. If there is lung disease plus some underlying cardiac dysfunction, risk is increased. While the procedure might still be appropriate, the risks require careful consideration.
