Touch up Ablation

As a follow up on my Touch up Ablation post of 12/6/02, I had the catheter ablation here in San Diego at Scripps Memorial Hospital a week ago Tuesday on 12/17/02. The ablation was to cure the SVT (Supra Ventricle Tachycardia), which I had been experiencing intermittently since my successful Maze on 4/4/02. The Maze cured the Afib, but I evidently had a secondary pathway (in addition to the AV node) from the Atria to the Ventricles, causing some rapid heart beats to occur (about 90 bpm instead of my NSR of around 75 bpm). So after the EP here in SD did the catheter “burn” of this pathway, I went home, but the evening after the ablation, I experienced some more episodes of 95 bpm rapid heart beats. However, after that disconcerting event, I have not had another reoccurrence of rapid beats (9 days now). I saw the surgeon who did the ablation today on a follow up visit, and he is most encouraged even after the rapid beat episode the day after the ablation. He thinks I’ll be in NSR from now on, and has scheduled a follow up visit again in 6 weeks. He says should the rapid beat episodes ever reoccur (not likely in his estimation), then he could do another touch up ablation, although the burn on the next one would be closer to the AV node, which he knows (as do the experts on this board) that you have to be extremely careful ablating too near the AV node, as this can result in more harm than good. Anyway, I’m pretty optimistic, enjoying the NSR, and will keep the board posted in the future about the long-term results of my ablation.
My thoughts and prayers are with Allie for your PVI today, and also for Sarah for your surgery on January 2nd, and Lowell for your PVI on January 9th.
Happy New Year to all, Don
