I underwent successful maze surgery on 7/11/02. I was born in 1952 with a heart defect called tetrology of fallot. I had open heart surgery in 1960 at the University of Minnesota with Drs. Varco and Lillihei to correct my heart defects. After almost 40 years of no problems, my heart rhythm changed to atrial fibrillation. From 2001 to 2002, I saw heart specialists at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and underwent 2 cardioversions and used amiodarone to keep me in sinus rhythm (unsuccessful) then underwent maze surgery. After 5 months, I am still in normal sinus rhythm, but just got home from a pacemaker implant to control some other pacing problems. Dr. Dearani at the Mayo did my maze procedure. I am very pleased with the Mayo Clinic, their doctors, and my results.
