I suggest that you change cardiologist; the one you're seeing is obviosly not well-informed! Just look around the Maze site (and follow various links) to verify that your Cardiologist is not updated on the success rate for Maze (that is, from what I've come to understand, well into the 90% range).
In regard of "long term effects" - well, using myself as an example; without the Maze I wouldn't be able to persue the active, sport oriented life I enjoy (running daily, playing tennis etc.). For me, as for many others, Maze has made a tremendous difference in my life.
Good luck with your cont'd quest for information (and a better doc...).
