I am glad you raised this topic because post-op depression is definitely a factor that is little discussed. I agree with those who have suggested that you get a doctor who is a little more understanding than to just suggest that you "get over it."

For me, my recovery has not been smooth until about 5 months after the MAZE (much longer than I expected) and I did have down times thinking that the surgey had not worked and that perhaps I would not regain my energy and active life style. When I was in a funk I'd just go out and get some exercise--usually a hike--and come home feeling much brighter. I am not fond of pills of any kind so unless you really have to I'd think twice about taking anti-depressents. However, they might get you over the hump if you took something for several weeks. What might be helpful is talking with someone with whom you can really share your feelings--a wise pastor or friend perhaps. Sometimes if you can get worries, disappointments and anger out on the table it helps. Good luck. I'll be praying for you and please let us know how it goes. Anne Rowthorn
