I imagine Steve will weigh in on this question with a good medical answer; but as a layperson, my first question would be: "Was the Maze successful in correcting this person's afib?" My second question would be: "Is this person still taking any drugs?"

I have also heard about post-heart surgery depression and it entered my mind pre-maze, but since I was already so depressed, I was ready to try anything. In my case, getting off the Rythmol post-maze REALLY made a difference in my already much-improved, zero-afib demeanor.

The fact that some of the drugs prescribed to us as afibbers can cause depression could be part of the answer, as could an incomplete "cure" (Henry can probably provide some details/support here).

I hope that this person, if relieved of their afib, would have an experienced physician who will help with anti-depressant meds and guidance. The book you found sounds like a good first step!
