I was afraid of the thought of sugery myself. I had never had surgery or an hospitaliztion before. A friend of mine, who had by-pass surgery, said to me the night before my sugery (maze + repair of mytal valve), "a lot of people have open heart surgery every day and deal with it... You just have to do what you have to do." You deal with the IVs, bed pans etc. The most important things are to select good doctors and have confidence in them and to have support from your loved ones. After the surgery, I had a lot of discomfort,but relatively little pain. The first couple of days you're drugged up and pain is not an issue. Recovery was steady, but slow. Every 3 or 4 days there was marked improvement. I came home 10 days after surgery. I took over the counter pain killers and did not need prescription drugs. May be three months before, I felt able to all daily tasks. Whatever you decide, just be comfortable with the decision. My best wishes to you. Bottom line, I'm glad that I had the procedure. I feel great now.
