I had my maze on 3/29/2002 after living for several years with lone afib. I also feel strongly that long-term aerobic exercise is probably one of the main factors in the development of afib. I have worked as an airline pilot for a small company that employs about 20 pilots. This has been a very stable workforce for the past 22 years. I am still working with almost the very same 20 pilots that I started with back in 1980. During those years I have been the only one of the 20 to develop afib. I have also been the only one who has spent the last 30 years doing some form of aerobic exercise almost daily. I have been into running, climbing mountains, skiing, biking at different times. I use to think nothing of pushing my heart rate to the max. I probably did do some damage.
My Electrophysiologist told me once that she had noticed that for some reason she seemed to have a large number of afibbers who were from mountain areas such as Toas and Los Alamos who were into mountain biking. She thinks there is a relationship. I notice from her card that she is a member of the American Heart Association Committee on Electrocardiography and Arrhythmias.
