Hi everyone,
I had my maze performed by Dr. McCarthy at the CC on January 19, 2001 after 15 years of a-fib episodes. The surgery was very much a success - with the exception of one afternoon a few weeks after surgery I have not had any more a-fib! However, beginning three months after the surgery I started having chest pain which I attributed to overuse of weakened muscles. At six months post-op I was diagnosed with inflammatory pericarditis from the surgery; I was given Indocin, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory - I took it for six months and had no more problems until August of this year when the pain reoccured. My echo showed a very small amount of fluid in the pericardium, and I was given a steroid pack to take for 6 days which seemed to clear the problem. However, a couple of weeks later I started to have pain again - this time more in my upper chest and neck. The Doctor ordered X-Rays which showed one of the bands around my sternum is broken - he says they will do nothing about it unless it bothers me. My question is this - I know I still have pains in my chest - I'm just not sure about the cause. It seems like I remember someone having problems with their wires and had to have them removed. I'm thinking it was Jack Drum, but I'm not sure. Has anyone else had problems? If so, I would like to know what kind of pain or problems you experienced and what you did about it. Thanks!
Terry
