When choosing a surgeon for a procedure, it is important to find out about that particular surgeon's track record is, both percent success in outcome for which the surgery was intended, and the associated morbidities (average hospital stay, reoperations and so forth). In general, those who do the most have the best success rates and lowest morbidities. Not to knock the new kids on the block, but you have to do a certain number each year to stay in practice, and to keep the whole operating/postop care team together. It's very important to ask, and surgeons shouldn't have any problem with the questions. The better they are, the prouder they are of their statistics.
