Roger,
I'm 44 years old and have had "palpitations" since I was in my twenties. These have included premature beats, both ventricular and atrial, atrial fib, atrial flutter and atrial tachicardia. I would imagine many of the maze alumni have experienced the same. For me, I had no problems distinguishing what was going on - but 15 years of experience is a good teacher. The most difficult to distinguish between was a-fib & a-flutter which feels the same to me - the only difference was that my pulse with the flutter was more constant. With a-fib it was all over the place. I've found that premature atrial beats aren't as strongly felt as premature ventricular beats. PVC's can sometimes give me a light-headed feeling. I think that feeling occurs when the ventricle accumulates a more than normal amount of blood (due to the premature beat), then when the next beat occurs it feels stronger because of pushing the blood out. My sister is the same as me as far as distinguishing palpitations; my father, however, has been in a-fib for many years and says he never feels it. I guess some people feel it more than others.
